If you’ve recently stepped into the Latin dance scene, you might have heard dancers refer to Salsa in Line (often called LA or NY Style) and Cuban Salsa (or Casino). While both share the same infectious rhythm and passionate energy, they offer unique approaches to movement, connection, and musicality. At The Salsa Center, we embrace the diversity of Salsa styles and want to help you explore what makes each one special.
Let’s break down the key differences between Salsa in Line and Cuban Salsa so you can find your groove!
1. Dance Structure: Line vs. Circle
Salsa in Line (LA/NY Style):
Danced on a "slot" or straight line. Partners move back and forth along this imaginary line, creating a polished, performance-ready style.
Cuban Salsa (Casino):
Danced in more circular or curved patterns. Partners move around each other, creating a flow that mimics the natural movement of social interaction.
2. Timing and Style
LA Style (On1): Break steps on the 1 count. Emphasizes sharpness, dips, tricks, and shines (solo footwork).
NY Style (On2): Breaks on the 2 count, often described as more smooth and elegant, with a strong connection to the rhythm instruments.
Cuban Style: Focuses on body movement, flavor, and rhythm. It’s more grounded and spontaneous, often involving playful exchanges between partners.
3. Body Movement and Flair
Salsa in Line: More stylized with clean lines, arm styling, and theatrical flair, especially in shines.
Cuban Salsa: Emphasizes hip and torso movement, natural footwork, and Afro-Cuban body isolations. It feels more relaxed and “in the moment.”
4. Partner Connection and Lead/Follow Dynamics
Salsa in Line: Focused on precise lead and follow techniques with an emphasis on visual appeal.
Cuban Salsa: More conversational and reactive. The lead and follow dynamic is playful, with improvisation being a key component.
5. Music Interpretation
Salsa in Line: Dancers often follow the phrasing of the instruments strictly and match their moves to specific hits and breaks in the music.
Cuban Salsa: Tends to be more rhythmic and percussion-driven, interpreting the music through natural movement, humor, and expression.
6. Rueda de Casino (Cuban Group Dance)
A signature element of Cuban Salsa is Rueda de Casino, where multiple couples dance in a circle and switch partners through synchronized moves called out by a leader. It’s dynamic, social, and tons of fun!
Which One Should You Try?
Why not both? Each style brings something beautiful and enriching to your dance journey. Whether you love the elegant precision of in-line salsa or the grounded joy of Cuban Salsa, there's room to explore and grow.
At The Salsa Center, we offer both styles in various class levels, so you can find what resonates with your personality and dance goals. However, we specialize in Cuban-style Salsa! Cuban Salsa is also known as Casino. It reflects the heart of Cuban culture, lively, expressive, and deeply rooted in Afro-Cuban rhythms. It's more than just a dance; it’s a celebration of community, music, and joy. We celebrate this authentic Cuban tradition and invite dancers of all levels to experience the flavor and freedom of Casino. Whether you're dancing with a partner or exploring the joy of Salsa Suelta (solo Cuban Salsa), you’ll find connection, rhythm, and fun in every step.
Curious about what makes it so unique? Come try a class and discover your own Salsa style. Whether you’re new to dancing or ready to expand your skills, we’ll help you find your rhythm.
